When broken down, the word “ashi” means foot and “atsu” means pressureHowever, ashiatsu practitioners may also utilize their knees, elbows, palms, and fingers (“shiatsu” translates to “finger pressure” (“shi” meaning finger). Ashiatsu includes a combination of Swedish, myofascial, and compression massage strokes. It includes long gliding strokes associated with Western or Swedish massage and aspects of the ancient Eastern techniques and philosophies of Shiatsu and Ayurveda. Thai Massage techniques, stretches, and compressions may also be used. It has a long and fascinating history but a relatively new and growing following here in the United States. It may also be referred to as barefoot massage, or gravity assisted massage. Ashiatsu barefoot massage is a modern take on an ancient practice.

Ashiatsu barefoot massage, unlike most other barefoot methods, is performed on the western-friendly massage table instead of a floor mat. The massage table set up allows clients to put their face down comfortably in a face rest (not off to the side). Since ashiatsu is performed on the table, overhead bars are needed for balance.
